We at NutrientChef love articles written by David Zinczenko who is the author of the books, Eat This Not That!. The comparisons he gives are priceless. One recent article focused on the 30 worst sandwiches that you can eat in restaurants. Let’s just say there is a club sandwich out there that has 1,752 calories and 28 grams of saturated fat. We won’t tell you where this monstrosity lives; you will have to read the article to find out! Note that each “worst sandwich” choice comes with a much better choice below it that will help you shave off hundreds of calories. We recommend always looking up your favorite restaurant meal online before you order it. You can build a short list of “safe” choices at all of your favorite spots. This is a good read!

Author: Chef Michele

What’s happening at NutrientChef? This year marked the fourth year that we have worked with Uncle Ben’s Rice to conduct a cooking demonstration to highlight their new whole-grain rice products. The project starts with Michele developing recipes that focus on Uncle Ben’s products that are easy to make and family-friendly. She also writes tips on how to include whole-grain rice in everyday meals. The past two years, there has been a radio spot recorded as well. The project culminates in a large cooking demonstration at the annual Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) sponsored by the American Dietetic Association which was held in Boston this year. Brown rice is a fabulous high fiber carbohydrate that can serve as the base for so many dishes.

Here are ten tips for healthy eating that will help you beat the holiday bulge! You can download these tips plus several delicious and healthful recipes by clicking here: NutrientChef Healthy Holidays 2010.

1.      Eat slowly and savor food, take note of how much you are eating.

2.     Continue with your exercise routine-schedule time if your days are hectic!

3.    Never go to a party hungry- eat a balanced snack before you leave the house so you can make thoughtful decisions.

4.    Choose healthier snacks at social gatherings- vegetables, hummus, whole-grain crackers, small amounts of cheese, fruit…Offer to bring a healthy option!

5.    Watch liquid calories!  Alcoholic beverages, juice, punch, and eggnog are calorie dense!  Try a fruit juice “spritzer” made with seltzer water.

6.    Fill half of your plate with veggies!  Offer a festive salad before the meal.

7.    Stick to your normal eating plan of meals and snacks.  Do not skip meals because you will end up consuming more calories later on!

8.    Choose one dessert at a gathering and enjoy in moderation.

9.    Focus gatherings around non-food activities.  Try a game of flag football, ice skating, site-seeing, playing board games/cards…

10.  Start an active family tradition- what about a before dinner walk or short run?
